Coexistence testing for medical devices requires understanding radio protocols, the environment in which the device may operate, and the techniques to improve coexistence and its challenges. Implementing one or more of the coexistence techniques is essential to delivering reliable device and network performance. Testing these implementations is critical to properly characterizing the device behavior in the presence of other devices, including those using other radio protocols. An optimal coexistence test plan requires the test engineer to characterize the expected RF environment, choose the test signals and then compile the functional wireless performance (FWP) requirements.

The test setup consists of the device under test (DUT) connected to another device. However, the test format depends on whether there is an external antenna connection on the DUT, whether the device will operate in a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) network, or if it features directional antennas. Each test setup consists of similar components: a DUT, another device that connects or pairs with the DUT, a competing network device, and a spectrum analyzer.
