What is NTN?
Non-terrestrial networks (NTN) extend wireless connectivity beyond traditional terrestrial networks by integrating satellite communication (SATCOM) and airborne technologies. They incorporate satellites in low, medium, and geostationary orbits (LEO, MEO, GEO), along with high-altitude platforms (HAPS) and drones, ensuring broader coverage, including remote and underserved areas. With the rise of 5G NTN, these networks enhance mobile broadband and IoT applications by providing extended reach and reliability.
NTN integrates terrestrial and satellite networks within the 3GPP ecosystem, enabling mobile devices to communicate without dedicated satellite hardware. As NR NTN evolves, 5G satellite connectivity is expanding, positioning SATCOM as a critical component of modern telecommunications, supporting global connectivity, IoT, and the growing commercialization of space.
